Curved vs. Straight Penis: An Introduction to Penile Straightening / “Dragon-Raising” Surgery

Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Chu Hsin-Cheng, a penile enhancement specialist focusing on male enlargement and girth enhancement surgery.

Actually, many people’s penises aren’t perfectly straight. Curving to the left, right, upward, or downward is very common.

There’s even a saying that “an upward-curving dick is the ultimate prize,” because the upward angle can better stimulate the G-spot or prostate in certain positions. Some people with straight penises even specifically want theirs to curve to improve their sexual performance.

But some people are naturally more curved, or their penis may have been injured, struck, or pulled, damaging the tunica albuginea and causing an acquired curvature. This can affect not only penetration, but also appearance and confidence.

In that case, you should see a doctor for an assessment to find out whether corrective surgery is needed.

Understanding the Corpora Cavernosa and Tunica Albuginea

To understand why a penis curves, let’s first get to know its internal structures:

  • Corpora cavernosa (two): primarily responsible for erectile firmness
  • Tunica albuginea: surrounds the two corpora cavernosa and holds their shape; its strength is like a rubber band
  • Corpus spongiosum (one): surrounds the urethra and forms the glans at the tip

Penile curvature is often related to deformation of the tunica albuginea or uneven tension.

How do you measure the angle of penile curvature?

If you want to know just how curved your penis is, measuring the angle is key!
The method is simple. Just follow these three steps:[[ [DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000014]]]

1. Get a fully erect penis
Measurements taken when you’re only partly erect or going between hard and soft won’t be accurate. When taking photos or observing, make sure your penis is fully erect for an accurate result.

2. Take a dick pic
Take one photo from above, then another from the side.
Find the “axis” of your penis
Imagine your penis is a straight rod
Draw two axis lines from the base to the tip of the glans (the front half vs. the back half)
The curve is usually around the midpoint where the axis changes direction

3. Analyze it with an app or a photo
You can use “Angle Meter 360” (available on iOS / Android)
The angle between the two axis lines is the angle of your penile curvature
Highly recommended—free and easy to use

How much curvature counts as curved?

A slight curve is completely normal. In most cases, a curve of less than 20–30 degrees doesn’t significantly affect sexual activity.
But if the curve is too pronounced, you may experience the following:[[ [DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000032]]]

  • Difficulty with penetration
  • Sex feels awkward
  • Thrusting may make your partner uncomfortable
  • You may also feel pain or have incomplete erections

Is there a hard lump in your penis? What is Peyronie’s disease?

If you notice that your penis has an unusual curve and a hard lump, or that it hurts when erect, you may have Peyronie’s disease.

There are many possible causes:[[ [DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000036]]]

  • Masturbating too vigorously
  • Overly vigorous sex
  • Injury to the tunica albuginea
  • Or chronic inflammation with no known cause

After the tunica albuginea is injured, plaques can form. These plaques may harden and calcify, making one side of the penis less flexible and causing it to curve, or even affecting erectile firmness.

How is Peyronie’s disease treated?

1. Conservative treatment
Observe for 3–12 months during the acute phase
Combine with oral medication to control inflammation and fibrosis

2. Minimally invasive treatment
Low-intensity shockwave therapy + PRP growth factor injections
May soften plaques and improve pain and curvature

3. Surgical treatment
If the first two methods don’t work, corrective surgery may be considered

What types of penile straightening surgery are there?

1. Tunical plication
This is the most common corrective surgery. Depending on the direction of the curve, sutures are used to fold the longer side of the tunica albuginea and straighten the penis.

Advantages: Erectile firmness remains unchanged, it is less invasive, and recovery is faster. Suitable for penises with less complex curvature.
Disadvantages: The erect penis may be shorter, and you may be able to feel the knots in the sutures.

2. Short-side tunical lengthening (tissue graft repair)This is basically a matter of taking from one side to make up for the other.
Suitable for people with a severe angle or more complex deformity.
The “short side” of the tunica albuginea is cut and lengthened, then repaired with graft tissue (commonly a thigh vein or fascia).

Advantages: Preserves the most length
Disadvantages: The surgery is more difficult and requires an additional incision in the thigh. Erectile firmness may decrease somewhat.

3. Penile implant
Suitable for patients with severe erectile dysfunction and curvature who cannot get an erection.
It is performed together with tunical lengthening to address both length and firmness once and for all.

Advantages: Increased erect length; the penile implant ensures firmness, so you never have to worry about firmness or length again.
Disadvantages: More invasive, higher risk of infection, and expensive

How long is the recovery period?

Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery:[[ [DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000071]]]
Simple plication: Daily activities can resume in 1–3 days; sexual activity can resume in 4–6 weeks
Tissue graft / penile implant: Daily activities can resume in 3–5 days; sexual activity can resume in 4–6 weeks
Avoid sex and excessive erections during recovery to give the tunica albuginea time to heal.

How much does surgery cost?

Costs vary depending on the type and complexity of the surgery, the surgeon’s experience, the medical facility, and other factors:[[ [DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000076]]]
Tunical plication: NT$50,000–150,000
Short-side tunical lengthening +/- tissue graft: NT$50,000–150,000
Penile implant: NT$250,000–500,000 (depending on brand and specifications)

Can a straight penis be made to curve upward? The so-called “Dragon-Raising” surgery

Someone asked me, “Doctor, I want my penis to curve upward a little so sex feels more stimulating. Is that possible?”

The answer is: In theory, yes. But before doing it, you need a thorough assessment. This “Dragon-Raising” surgery isn’t suitable for everyone.

That reminds me of an episode of “Chuuka Ichiban!” about “Rising Dragon Dumplings.” The two types of dumpling wrappers expand at different rates, making the whole dumpling curve upward like a dragon raising its head.

The principle behind Dragon-Raising surgery is similar.

A few sutures are used to create a “controlled restriction” on the dorsal (upper) side of the penis. This allows the corpora cavernosa on the ventral (lower) side to expand more during an erection, creating a natural upward curve—the so-called “Dragon-Raising” surgery.

Which surgery is right for me?

Every penis has a different curvature angle, erectile firmness, and plaque location. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

※Here’s a simple comparison guide:[[ [DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000093]]]

Prioritize firmness → Tunical plication
Complex curvature → Short-side tunical lengthening + tissue graft
Complex curvature with poor erectile firmness → Tunical lengthening + penile implant
Sufficient budget → Penile implant or advanced combination procedure
Want an upward-curving penis → Tunical plication (“Dragon-Raising” surgery)

Before surgery, it’s a good idea to take three photos of your erect penis: one from the front and one from each side.
And discuss the following with your doctor:[[ [DESIGNHU_TOKEN_000102]]]

How firm are your erections?
Does your partner experience discomfort?
What do you want to improve: appearance, function, or confidence?
Your sexual habits and expectations?

This will help you achieve the “Dragon-Raising” result you’re hoping for after surgery!
