Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Hsin-Cheng Chu, a penis aesthetics expert specializing in penile lengthening and girth-enhancement surgery.

You may have heard of length, girth, angle, and hardness, but… did you know? Some penises are so inconspicuous when flaccid they seem to turtle up, but in bed they grow and expand like they’ve eaten a rubber fruit. Others look impressive, but don’t change much in size when erect.
The key to all this is—the penis expansion ratio.

What is the penis expansion ratio?

Simply put: Expansion ratio = erect length ÷ flaccid length
For how to measure penis length, see:

Is my penis big enough? How do I measure it? How to take a good dick pic

Some people’s penises are only 5 cm when flaccid, but reach 15 cm when erect—a whopping 3x expansion ratio. We call this:
✅ Grower (a penis that grows significantly when erect)
By contrast, some people are already hanging at 12 cm when flaccid, and only reach 14 cm when erect—a small change. We call this:
✅ Shower (a penis that looks larger when flaccid), colloquially called a “han-diao” in Taiwanese Hokkien

What expansion ratio is normal? Am I a Shower?

While researching this, I initially thought Grower and Shower were just jokes among men.
Do Grower and Shower have clear definitions? It turns out a doctor really did conduct a very serious study!

According to a 2022 study from Spain (225 men):
On average, the penis increases in length by 42.6% when erect.

  • Growers have a noticeable increase in erect length (expansion ratio >1.56), with a thinner tunica albuginea and greater change.
  • Showers are longer when flaccid and change less when erect (expansion ratio <1.31), but are more eye-catching in appearance.
  • Penis girth also increases, especially for Growers. Their tunica albuginea is more elastic and can stretch further!

Another 2018 study from the United States claimed that an increase of more than 4 cm in erect length qualifies as a Grower, while an increase of less than 4 cm makes someone a Shower.
Of course, age, ethnicity, and genetics can all affect study results, so these papers are best taken as a reference. So far, there have been no related studies in Asia.

Does the expansion ratio change with age?

The short answer: yes!
As you get older, testosterone levels decline and erection quality worsens, so the expansion ratio may gradually decrease. You may also gain more fat, making your penis look shorter when it’s actually hidden by abdominal fat.
So it’s a good idea to exercise regularly and maintain healthy hormone levels to help preserve your penis’s “elasticity.”

Can I become a Shower? Want your penis to look more impressive? These procedures may be worth considering.

Male aesthetic surgery is becoming increasingly advanced, with procedures for penile girth enhancement and lengthening.
There’s also “penile Botox,” a more cost-effective option. After injection, flaccid length increases, making the penis look more impressive.

To sum up

●Grower/Shower is a normal physiological difference—there’s no need to worry.
●An increase in girth during an erection is due to the elasticity of the tunica albuginea.
●If you’re concerned about appearance, you can consider penis enlargement surgery, but it should be assessed and performed by a qualified doctor.
●Confidence and health are what matter most.
