Should You Have Your Penile Frenulum Cut? Costs, Wound, and Recovery Time—Everything You Need to Know

Hi everyone, I’m Dr. Chu Hsin-Cheng, a penile aesthetics specialist specializing in male enlargement and girth-enhancement surgery.
Lately, patients online have often asked me, “Should I have my penile frenulum cut?”
And then, out of nowhere, they send me a dick pic and ask me to take a look (?!)
I’ve been asked so many times that I finally decided to write an article to answer the question!

What Is the Penile Frenulum?

The penile frenulum is like a “ligament” for the penis—a small band of tissue located beneath the glans (medical term: frenulum). Normally, it helps keep the foreskin in place and maintain a sense of stability during sex..
The frenulum has a rich supply of nerves and blood vessels, and it’s a sensitive area for men. Stimulation there during sex or masturbation can feel pleasurable.

Some men are born with a short frenulum, or it may be prone to pulling, tearing, or even bleeding during sex.
Once the frenulum tears, the wound may heal with scar tissue. This makes an already tight frenulum even tighter, making it more likely to tear again and creating a vicious cycle.

When Is It Advisable to Have the Penile Frenulum “Cut” or “Released”?

If you experience one or more of the following, surgery may be worth considering:
● Pulling or pain in the frenulum during an erection, masturbation, or sex
● The frenulum pulls the glans downward [垂頭喪氣]
● The frenulum tears and bleeds during sex
● After circumcision, the frenulum feels restricted, tight, or uncomfortable
● Premature ejaculation concerns along with a sensitive frenulum

How Does the Surgery Work?

The frenulum is incised and then sutured horizontally to release it and change the direction of tension. Any excess skin is also trimmed for a natural, attractive result.
After surgery, you won’t feel any pulling, so you can enjoy sex freely!

How Much Does It Usually Cost?

Prices at self-pay clinics generally range from NT$5,000 to NT$12,000, depending on the clinic.
If treatment at a major hospital is needed due to repeated tearing or chronic inflammation, it may be covered by National Health Insurance. However, this depends on a doctor’s assessment, and you may need to be scheduled for surgery.

How Large Is the Wound? How Long Does Recovery Take?

  • The wound is small, usually 1–2 cm long, and pain is mild. It generally won't affect your daily life or work much after surgery.
  • The wound usually scabs over and heals within a week.
  • Avoid sex for 2–3 weeks to prevent the wound from tearing open again.
